Business Case
Winterthur Insurance needed a new Smalltalk persistence framework for their agency system V3. After a tough shootout MPF/Smalltalk was selected because of its high performance, its unique features like transaction replication, its configuration options and server side optimization.
Technology
V3 is built as client/server system with the ability to replicate objects from the agent laptops to the agency database and from the agency databases to the headquarter system. MDS (MicroDoc Server) is used to access the objects when running online. Direct database access is used in offline mode. A headless version of the application has been integrated into the CORBA based Winterthur portal.

Technology Smalltalk
MicroDoc developed a class library by the name of “Objects for Notes” – to connect
Smalltalk runtime systems with Lotus Notes and Domino. The product allows for tight and efficient integration of Smalltalk systems and Lotus Domino services like document databases, e-mail, fax integration and LDAP services.
1995 IBM SWS Labs in North Carolina signed a licensing contract for the technology. MicroDoc was contracted to integrate the product into the VisualAge Smalltalk development environment.
One of the top 10 IT service suppliers in Europe develops and operates applications on behalf of their 200 banking customers. Their next generation application infrastructure is mainly targeted towards Web – application development and is the backbone for every newly developed solution.
Because of the size and complexity of this environment, the customers developed a proprietary Portal solution which overcomes most of the limitations of standard products, like deployment and application coupling.
MicroDoc reviewed the core components of this framework to make sure, that SLA requirements are met and with special focus on low memory requirements, deadlock prevention and backend performance.
