FleetBoard DispoPilot - OSGi Telematics in commercial vehicles
The innovative FleetBoard DispoPilot, developed by FleetBoard in cooperation with IBM and MicroDoc, combines on-board navigation, job status, barcode scanning and two-way messaging in a single handheld device.
The ruggedized mobile unit combines several features:
- Full colour screen with large easy to use buttons
- Built-in bar code scanner
- Provides on-board navigation directly to job/delivery address without the driver needing to type the address in separately
- Two-way communication of job/delivery manifest and status updates about the current delivery, including confirmation of delivery for automatic invoicing
Featuring the world's first open-standards-based embedded service platform - the OSGi Service Platform (here the IBM Service Management Framework-SMF), the FleetBoard solution enables new software service bundles to be downloaded via mobile networks (GSM/GPRS) in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
MicroDoc embedded systems engineers worked together with IBM to customize the J2ME Platform for this device.
MicroDoc software engineers developed much of the user interface. In addition to typical navigation and logistics-management tasks, the device allows full two-way communication between the driver and base, using free text or predefined text blocks. Ease of use was the primary factor in an environment of multi-lingual commercial lorry drivers.
